The exhibition call caught me between a summer camping trip in the Alps and trekking in Nepal. ‘Man in/and nature’ and ‘man as nature’ have always been of interest to me, and the cliché of “conquering a mountain” when everyone knows it is only ones-self that is conquered often resonates when I am out walking. Individuals and nations have raced to cross the Taklimakan desert, scrambled to reach the North Pole and climb Everest, yet when out in the immensity of nature and with geological perspective, one realizes just how insignificant the outcomes of these undertaking are. The images chosen are from various trips of mine, dramatic yet unidentified landscapes in Armenia, Italy and India. The landscapes have been manipulated to include an iconic podium in its classic, almost completely two-dimensional character. It is not clear what has been conquered and who has done it, there is a slightly anticlimactic feel to the situation save for our focus on what we perceive as man-made, a geometric mark in the landscape that we identify as human – or unnatural. There are no winners; there is only being out there.
